Growing up in the 8-bit era was a huge part of my childhood, and for the last 27 years I’ve been a hardcore video game fanatic. I decided to pay homage to my roots by getting this tattoo. It was done by Geary Morrill from Outer Limits Tattoo in Long Beach, CA. Geary is a beast at tattooing pixelated images, as this Mario wasn’t the easiest design to do. The mushroom above it is from Monkeys To Go in Whittier, CA.

Rick (@rwelphinstone) recently got his first tattoo: a binary representation of the most important dates in his life. Contained in these 384 small circles (and separated by 6 small triangles) are his birthday, his wife’s birthday, the birthdays of his two sons, his wedding day, and the day his father passed away. It’s interesting to see what different geeks encode in binary tattoos.
Jim Swales at Ink Game Tattoos in Ajax, Ontario dropped these dots on Rick.

Daniel sent in his simple hydrogen / Dr Manhattan tattoo on the back of his neck along with the following story:
It’s kind of a long, winding story, that has a lot to do with being laid off just three hours after receiving the diagnosis that my sudden hearing loss was being caused by an acoustic neuroma (or vestibular schwannoma. muh-muh-muh-my neuroma). The next morning one of the first thoughts I had was, “Dammit, it’s about time I get that tattoo I’ve always wanted.”
So how’d I end up with a hydrogen atom on the back of my neck? It’s one of those things that makes a lot of sense to me but is hard to explain. I really love Dr. Manhattan’s character in Watchmen, and though I know it’s probably a a geek sin, I adored the way he was handled in the film adaptation. I couldn’t get Phillip Glass out of my head during my first (and terrifying) MRI. I wanted something that could be read, even if only in a round about way, as “Deus Ex Machina” and thought the Dr. Manhattan reference as well as a sort of totem of faith in science and medicine was suitable enough.
The surgery to remove the tumor and recovery were both pretty major, and it was almost after a year after the diagnosis that I ended up finally getting the tattoo. The right side of my face was paralyzed as a result of the operation, and I have a major scar along my neck from a follow up surgery. I wanted to exert some undeniable, absolute control over the body that rebelled against me.
“If I’m to have a symbol, it shall be one I respect.”
Stephanie at the Electric Chair in Houston helped Daniel take some control over his body and dropped the ink in the back of neck.

Today’s geeky tattoo comes all the way from Israel! The tattoo was sent in by a friend (with permission) and belongs to Tom Neta. Included in the sleeve is:
Soul Eater, Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Gurren Lagann, Domo-kun, Gastly (from Pokemon), Deadpool, an “emo Mario mushroom”, and Bleach. A ton of stuff, but it all works incredibly well together. Tom’s friend didn’t mention, but I’m guessing this ink was by Michael Kozlenko and Alexey Zamovtevsky (who doesn’t exist on the internet apparently). He did mention that it took 20 hours of work over 3 months.

Every year Kimberly Grant gets a tattoo for her birthday to mark time passing as she grows older. This year’s tattoo was of a Lego Boba Fett, mixing Star Wars with the world’s best toy. But there’s more to it than just being geeky. Kimberly says she got it for two reasons. The first being a tribute to her 3 year old cousin who is dying of cancer. Both her and her mom got Star Wars tattoos (her mom got R2D2). She says that every time she sees young Connor, they play Lego Star Wars together.
The second reason Kimberly got a Star Wars related tattoo this birthday is because she broke up with her boyfriend a week before her birthday (he dumped her via email, what a jerk). He hated Star Wars but Kimberly loves it. So the tattoo is also a constant reminder to “NEVER EVER TRUST A MAN THAT ISN’T A STAR WARS FAN!” Good advice.

Adriana sent in a picture of her “Triforce Trampstamp”. She says she got this tattoo while she was on spring break last year. She met a really short guy dressed all in green at her favorite place, Telma’s Bar. She says the guy was a little awkward and nervous at first, but after a couple of White Russians made with Romani milk, he really opened up and they hit it off.
They spent the next week running around having adventures, avoiding getting arrested for the Biggoron sword they found in an old antique shop, and generally raising hell. They had a lot of fun, well except for that late-night skinny-dip in the ocean that ended up in some nasty Biri stings.
Adriana says he treated her like a princess the whole week, culminating in a late night trip to WIld Zero Studios to get tattoos together. He got a triforce on the chest and Adriana got one on her lower back. A bottle of tequila later, she found herself alone in the hotel room with just a note that said, “Sorry babe, had to run off to fight Ganondorf. Had fun, catch you later.”

Spencer’s girlfriend, Amanda, sent in the above pic of his geeky gamer tattoo. For those not in the know, it’s the sigil from from “Shadow of Colossus” that you have to find in order to defeat each boss. Spencer got it because he wanted a gamer tattoo that wasn’t totally obvious. Lucky for him he’s not hairy enough to climb.

I think most people would agree with me when I say that Sherlock Holmes was a geek. Come on, think about it for a minute. No, stop thinking about Robert Downey Jr and how he made Sherlock Holmes all cool and stuff. The old school Sherlock Holmes that could deduce your entire life story from a small smudge of mud on your pants leg.
Allie, a graphic designer from Boston, sent in her tattoo of Sherlock Holmes complete with pipe and magnifying glass. What makes this extra special geeky is that it’s all done with the letters in his name with different fonts. Pretty awesome, eh?

Juan Rincon is the owner of the Mega Man X tattoo of Zero. Thanks to his fiancee, it was a birthday present for his 26th birthday. It’s not his only geeky tattoo, he says he’s also got “comic characters ranging from Devi of I Feel Sick/Johnny the Homicidal Maniac to Cat Witch Blair from Soul Eater, cartoon icons such as the Irken Army symbol from Invader Zim to the Horde symbol on my right hand”.
Jim Sweeny of Forever Art Tattoos in Corpus Christi, TX twisted Juan’s arm and inked it.

Gamer sleeves have to be on the top of my list of favorite geeky tattoos. I’m in luck that there are so many gamer geeks out there that get them so I can live vicariously through them. Today I’m living vicariously through Sean and his Nintendo sleeve. It features the classic characters: Link, Mario, Zelda, Peach, and Samus. He says he’s going to continue to expand it with other characters like Mega Man, Ryu, and Tron.
The tattoo was designed by Beau James and inked by Dan Wulff at Tattoo Faction in Cleveland, OH.
