Matt Haney sent in his tattoo of a Japanese toy robot from the 1970s. He speaks binary as any good robot does. For those of you that understand the 1s ad 0s, you’ll see that Matt has a love for retro tech. Ink by Michael Cangelosi at Eye Candy Tattoo in New Orleans.
Triforce Tuesday: Brendan and His Zelda Collection
There are Zelda fans, and then there are ZELDA FANS. Brendan is most assuredly the latter. He sent in the above shot of his triforce chest tattoo which alone shows his dedication. Then I noticed watched the video giving a tour of his room packed full with Zelda paraphernalia from 10 years worth of collecting. Wow. Biggest Zelda fan ever?
Here’s his room tour:

The Right to Bear Star Wars Forearms
Matt sent in his two Star Wars tattoos. The first is of one of those plastic extendable lightsabers, Darth Vader’s to be specific. It runs along his outer forearm from elbow to wrist. While he was at the tattoo shop sketching out the light saber, he says that the Imperial March came up on the iPod playing over the shop speakers. It was fate. The second is the sign of the Empire, which he and his friend both got after a long stint working on the Death Star, err I mean before they left for college.
If the two tattoos of the Dark Side don’t show you the power of Matt, just take a look at that guy in the purple shirt in the first photo. Yeah, he’s dead, suddenly choked to death because he wouldn’t turn off that Justin Bieber crap. Matt doesn’t like Justin Bieber.
What’s next for Matt? Well he plans to balance out the Dark Side with some good and hopes to get the Rebel sign as well as the toy version of Luke’s lightsaber on the the other arm.
BTW, Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you!

Steampunk Trilobite
Stephen sent in his steampunk trilobite tattoo. It’s based on an idea from H.I. von Slatt and is a trilobite of the species Corynexochida Bumastus. Now I’m no paelontologist and sometimes I think steampunk is just “goth with a clock glued to your hat”, but I really dig Stephen’s tattoo. Plus it’s got a good story behind it:
I decided to get a tattoo of a triolbite to celibrate my Grandmother’s life for two reasons, firstly she was inspired to study Geology after hearing about Globigerina ooze, and took it up in her late 60s becoming an avid rock breaker and passionately interested in all things paleontological. She also died quite suddenly and went from being a hughly well know member of the community to no longer here almost over night, much like the trilobite which can be found through out the fossil record world wide until the Permian extinction when they vanish without trace.
Oh, and it gives me an excuse to link to Jon Sarriugarte’s motorized (and rideable!) trilobite.

Sam’s Okami Tattoo
Sam “Anuvia” Olson sent in her Okami tattoo. I’ll let her explain:
I’ve always been a gamer gal since the first time I could even pick up a controller and ever since I’d always had dreamed of becoming a concept artist. The idea of seeing something I’d designed or helped bring to life being translated into a playable medium was something that always kept my going through my artistic development.
Around 2006/07 I began to be disinterested in idea of a career in gaming due to the fact that the gaming industry had officially been dominated by First Person Shooters and it seemed like the age of the platformer had official come to an end. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a good FPS (Put me on COD:5 and you’re goin’ down ;D) but it all just seemed like the world of gaming had been transformed into slight variations of the same thing.
Then, one day I happened across a game featuring a white wolf in which you played as a god…at first I thought it would be one of those poorly translated second string japanese games but I decided to give it a shot anyways, as the idea of painting seemed to neat to pass up. I watched the opening cutscene and fell in love. The style of the game and the remarkable visuals not only stunned me, but they actually renewed my faith in both the industry and also in myself as an artist. Okami was the game that dragged me out of my “dark place”, so to speak, and helped me find myself once again. Now that I’ve found a refreshing take on the modern video game that was not only fun to play, but visually captivating, I feel that I must move forward to find my place in the sun ;D (pun intended)
The tattoo was designed by Melita Curphy and the actual tattooing was done by Nate of First Amendment Tattoo.

Matt’s Circuitry
If the world completely collapses and we lose all our fancy technology, at least we can depend on Matt A. to supply the blueprint for rebuilding an AMD motherboard to help us rebuild civilization. Wait, what’s that Matt? You say it’s non-functioning because you had to redraw it to fit? Curses, we’re doomed.

You Might Get Fired For This One
I would normally apologize for the potentially NSFW photo, but c’mon, elvish writing in a classy photo? How could I not post it? Besides if you got fired for looking at this then you probably don’t want to be working there anyways, right? Or maybe you did and then the writing on Trish B.’s side is even more appropriate.
Trish is a big fan of the Lord of the Rings and liked the beautiful elvish language. She knew she wanted a tattoo of elvish writing and decided to get it in a less-normal spot that’s hidden by clothes. What does it say? “You never appreciate the things you have until you’ve lost them”

Kingdom Hearts Heartless Tattoo
Cher sent in her Heartless tattoo from Kingdom Hearts. She says she got it to remind herself not to be heartless.
Btw, those are her knees! I don’t even want to know how many of you clicked for the full side image just to make sure. ;)

Like Tears in Rain…
As I was browsing through Flickr the other day I came across this photo taken by a friend, Tristan Crane, of this great Bladerunner tattoo on Mo’s shoulder. Mo’s also a photographer and you can see his work (some NSFW) over at Naked Eye Photography. I inquired about the story behind the tattoo and was incredibly moved. I’ll let Mo’s words do the talking:
My father was a solider in the US Army. He fought in Korea and Vietnam, and as part of the Corps of Engineers he built roads and infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Latin America. By the time he retired, he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Humanitarian Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Air Medal, and two Bronze Stars.
His life was incredible. He saw so much in his lifetime that I can’t even begin to imagine. He was often telling stories, and we were always pressuring him to write them down. He began to write some memories down about 4 years before he died, but didn’t get far. They’re mainly quick sketches that outline adventures. His memoirs are beautiful, but fragmented. I wish he had been able to finish them, or that he had told me the stories in person.
His pages of fragmented memories begin with this paragraph:
“At the end of the movie Blade Runner, the replicant as he is dying, makes this last commentary. It reminds me of the admonition not to go into that dark night gently. The creature from another planet at the very end observed that all these memories will be lost in time like tears in rain. My recollections are those separate from tales told by others easily accepted as true memories. Hopefully, I have been able to make that distinction.”
My dad died on February 2nd, 2009. I had this quote tattooed on my arm 4 days after he died. He had the same tattoo, on the same arm- He got it at age 70 at a small biker shop in Colorado. His artist did it freehand. Although I’ll never be able to hear all of his stories, this tattoo allows me to have him with me always, and to remember how fantastic his life was.

Falkor the Luckdragon Tattoo
Crap, I used up all my NeverEnding Story material on another post. Uhh, here’s Maggie’s tattoo of Falkor, my favorite flying white dragon/dog creature. She says she got it for her older brother because they would watch the movie and he’d sing along and cry. That’s all I got. Well that, and a semi-nude shot of Maggie’s cupcake tattoo!
Maggie also teased me with the promise of sending in photos of her tattoo of “Lando Calrissian holding a colt 45 (the beverage not the firearm)” once it’s complete. I can’t wait.
