Soundwave Leg Sleeve

As someone who grew up with Transformers, I am in awe of this amazing sleeve on Justin. Not only is it Soundwave, one of the Decepticons, but it also includes all 10 of his tapes! Justin says that Soundwave was his favorite toy growing up, so he got this tattoo done by Germ at Brookland Park Tattoo. The original art work was done by comic artist Dan Khanna.

Stephen Hawking and Star Trek

It’s not every day you see a quote from Stephen Hawking tattooed on someone’s ribcage, but lucky for us Dawn is here to show her’s off. The quote reads, “To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit.” Dawn says she’s “a science nerd with a very Universal look on life, this is of course commentary on the smallness and general Universal unimportance of humans while still emphasizing the beauty of the Inner Self.”

In addition to the Stephen Hawking quote, she also has the Starfleet Communicator on her chest. There are a number of reasons why people get this tattoo; Dawn describes hers:

To me, the Starfleet Emblem represents not necessarily an exact model to follow of how humanity/lifeforms can work together, but a beautiful depiction of lifeforms as we know overcoming the pettiness of truly minor differences and accepting our smallness by forming alliances with one another.

Zombie Tattoo

If you skipped the title of this post you’re probably wondering, “Why the hell is Ed just posting a letter i tattoo?”. Read the title, look at the photo again and feel, as the color drains from your face: “THE ZOMBIES! THEY’RE EVERYWHERE!!!”

Well everywhere if you use Lucida Console as a font or if you’re Madyson. She and her fiance got matching zombie ‘i’ tattoos since they’re obsessed with zombies.

Still confused?

Trevor’s Multiple Geeky Tattoos

I don’t even know where to start with Trevor. He’s a paleontologist at the La Brea Tar Pits with lots of tattoos. I’ll let him explain in his own words:

I’m a paleontologist at the La Brea Tar Pits. That said, I’m also a hardcore geek. I’ve got LEGOs, Transformers, COBRA, and all sorts of crazy stuff all over my desk. I’m even using a Grimlock mouse right now. Naturally, I need some tats to fill out the void… hehe.

First one is a frontal view of a Sabertooth Cat skull (Smilodon fatalis) on my left shin. It happens to be the same skull we have on our mounted specimen in the museum.

Second is the Page Museum logo. I love my job. I get to play with big dead animals all day!

Third is me… as a LEGO figure. Some people get bricks. Some people get minifigs. However, it tends to be the height of narcissism to get a tattoo of yourself… so I combat that by rockin’ the LEGO “Me”ni-fig.

Fourth is the Decepticons Logo. Always go with the bad guys. Now, this is a big tattoo… on the outside of my right calf.

Converse logos on the inside ankles, right where they are on the high-top Chuck Taylors. ‘nuff said.

…last one is the logo of the parent museum of the one I work at… from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Thanks for sending all of them in! Something tells me you’re probably not planning on stopping with just these.

Triforce Tuesday: Aggie

Aggie’s been playing the Legend of Zelda series since she was only 6 years old after getting hooked on the first NES version. Yes, that’s right the gold cartridge many of us remember fondly. When it came time for her first tattoo, Aggie had Cory at Kapala Tattoo ink the Hyrule Crest on her back.

Triforce Tuesday is the result of everybody sending in triforce related tattoos. They’re popular and I want to showcase some of the better ones. If you’ve got a triforce related tattoo, send it in and see if you make the cut for Triforce Tuesday.

Microsoft Visual Studio Tattoo

Are you a programmer? Perhaps a .NET programmer DEVELOPER DEVELOPER DEVELOPER? Well even if you are you’re probably not as hardcore as Phil. He’s a .NET guy who just got his first tattoo, a Microsoft Visual Studio logo. He says he had trouble deciding between the Visual Studio logo and George, the gorilla from Rampage, but went with the logo this time. Here’s hoping he goes back and gets George too!

Cloud Chamber Traces Tattoo

Ok, I’ll own up and admit that this one is a bit over my head since I slept through some of my physics class. Ian Simmons, the Science Communication Director at the Centre For Life, got the above tattoo during an event at the Centre called “Designer Bodies“. He says it’s a tattoo of cloud chamber traces, which Wikipedia says are tracks or trails left behind by high energies of alpha and beta particles ionizing water or alcohol vapor in a Wilson chamber. Sounds like it’s basically a way to “see” radioactive decay and subatomic particles. Any scientists out there want to correct me?

Here’s a video of a cloud chamber in action:

Crazy stuff. The tattoo was done by Northside Tattooz. Thanks for sharing Ian.

Die Neue Haas Grotesk

This one is for all the font geeks out there. Photo was shot by my friend Scott Beale (of Laughing Squid) at the MoCCA Art Festival 2010 in New York. No idea who the owner is unfortunately. The tattoo belongs to Rohan Mitra.

Ten points to the person that can identify it, but no points lost if you have to cheat and check out Scott’s post for an explanation.

ps: I’m also a guest blogger on Laughing Squid! </shamelessplug>

Love and Hate, the Geeky Way

Love and Hate is a common theme everywhere and it commonly shows up in tattoos. Maybe it’s because the two four-letter words fit nicely on knuckles, or that most parts of the body have a counterpart to tattoo the opposite on. Whatever the reason, Tracie had always wanted love and hate tattoos, but didn’t want to go a traditional route. After her cousin (a video game geek) committed suicide she wanted something that reminded her of him every day and she wanted to support TWLOHA. So she got the less-than-three and less-than-divided-by-three tattoos above. She says they’re the start of a geeky sleeve and she has lots of plans for other geeky tattoos.

Nintendo Knuckles

No, I’m not talking about those cramps you get in your hands when you’ve been sitting in front of the console too long trying to beat Contra for the 2,174th time. (What? I’m the only one that still has trouble beating that stupid boss on level 2?) I’m talking about Abject’s awesome Nintendo knuckles tattoo. He writes:

..I knew I wanted something ridiculously nerdy so I put it to my friends on Twitter to give me an 8 letter, geeky word that best described me. My friend Liz came up with Nintendo and I knew she had the winner right then. As I was getting the tattoo done I realized I still had room for “SEGA” and “XBOX” on my lower knuckles for future tattoos – a win/win situation all around! How could I lose?

You can’t lose. It’s like have infinite lives. Reverend Todd over at Homeward Bound Tattoo bestowed the letters of awesome onto Abject’s hands. You can check out Abject’s site at abjectgothic.com or follow him on Twitter @abject
