No, this tattoo isn’t some weird combination of emoticons and smilies. It’s what’s known as a “fork bomb” or a wabbit. No, it’s not what happens when the air force runs out of ammunition and starts dropping silverware drawers either. A fork bomb is a denial of service attack on a machine that basically makes it run as many processes as possibly, locking up the machine. The above tattoo on Silveira is one of the more elegantly simple examples of how to drop a fork bomb on a Unix machine.
Photo via Silveira’s Flickr stream. You can also check out his blog at http://silveiraneto.net/. It’s mostly in Portuguese, but it’s obvious he’s one of us geeks!

Sarah sent in her nicely done ink of Amaterasu from Ōkami. Personally I’m not familiar with the game but I must say I’m impressed by the art and style I’ve seen from it. Sarah explains her own personal meaning behind the tattoo:
For me this tattoo is about overcoming obstacles and challenges…the wolf is looking over her shoulder at the flames which are behind her. Also, I was really inspired by the character in the game…just this one celestial wolf against all the darkness in the world.

Our inbox is filled with so many great Geeky Tattoos. Here’s a selection of some of my favorites that have come in on the email wire lately.
Jaqqi shows off her large Zelda back piece of the Zelda triforce. Love the coloring!
Mahendra sends in a periodic table tattoo on his calves and an accompanying Tux tattoo on the back of his neck:
Greg writes in with his Hsien-Ko ink:
I wanted to get a tattoo for years and couldn’t quite settle on something. Being a geek at heart, I knew it had to be something video game related. Everything finally came together recently for me to get a chibi Hsien-Ko tattoo. Hsien-Ko is a Capcom Dark Stalkers character and one of the coolest Capcom fighters on Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo (Playstation game that my wife and I have been playing since the mid 90s that was recently re-released for the Xbox 360 and PS3). I found this wicked artist Angelica at Happily Green who specializes in the form of chibi and she created the perfect image for me. After some local searching I found the perfect tat artist Jessie Cleary at Electric Expressions in New Orleans. She really gave it some depth and lively detail. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.
Already thinking about which character I will get next…
And last but not least, Christelle shows off her Spearrow Pokemon tattoo which is a great play on the traditional sparrow tattoos:

Kylee Lane sent in her Boba Fett tattoo above. Not sure how her husband feels about competing with someone as awesome as Boba Fett, but my guess is that he’s secretly glad that Boba is a fictional character.
On a side note, Kylee is also responsible for this awesome Fight Club Soap

We interrupt your irregularly scheduled posts of people with geeky tattoos to bring you a tattooing method that’s pretty geeky in itself.
Geeks love LEDS, it’s true. Some geeks love tattoos. Now science (it totally works) has managed to bring these two loves together into an LED tattoo. There’s an article over on h+ about how an associate professor of neurology and bioengeineering (Brian Litt) is working with Beckman Institute to develop medical uses for a new super-thin silicon transistor embedded in a dissolvable silk-based film only 250 nanometers thick. The thought is that it can be inserted under the skin and used to display useful medical information, like blood sugar levels for diabetes patients. Of course, someone with a large sum of money to pay for the procedure could also get this installed for aesthetic reasons too. Programmable tattoos sure would show up those luddites with ink under their skin.
But it’s not just limited to fancy display, researchers are also looking in to how to use this silicon transistors + silk-based film to control brain activity, prosthetic limbs, and more. So far no human tests have been done, but some experiments with the brave mice have proved successful. There’s a couple more articles with more details out there, including this one on Technology Review. And for you bio/physics geeks there also this paper from Applied Physics that “describes strategies for integrating single crystalline silicon electronics, where the silicon is in the form of nanomembranes, onto water soluble and biocompatible silk substrates.”

While doing some umm research on photography, I found the above picture of the lovely Fela Fray and her Nintendo controller tattoo. I contacted her and she told me the “back story” on her piece:
I often tell my father that he ruined my life 18 years ago when he bought me a Nintendo. It’s said in jest, but in a way it’s true. I’ve been playing video games ever since I got that NES. I play most games on my PC now, but no one forgets their first love. I couldn’t decide on a montage of 8-bit characters for a tattoo, so I decided to get the one thing that united them all: the NES controller. The only thing I don’t like about it is that perfect strangers sometimes think it’s ok to push the buttons.
Greg at Psycho Tattoo 2 is responsible for the homage to old school gaming. Fela also pointed out something that I missed at first glance. She doesn’t have just one geeky tattoo! Between her hipbones she has the inscription from The One Ring. She sent me the following close-up shot:
Oh, and if the well placed GeekyTattoos watermark is bugging you on the first image, know that I hate censoring things just as much as you (especially when it’s hot geeky pictures), but I like to keep Geeky Tattoos safe for work. If you want to check out all the uncensored photos, you’ll have to go over to the original post on Low Tek Photography (NSFW) to see the full set. There’s also a ton of other great pics on the site, but sadly no other geeky tattoos that I could find.

Anna sent in her impressive backpiece. She says it’s a tribute to people that changed and inspired her: Escher, Lovecraft, Tolkien, and her mom. The full piece was designed by a friend and then Anna got it inked by Attilio Capra at Il Pellerossa. The tattoo is based on the “Haunter in the dark” story from Lovecraft, with the geometrical crystal pictured as one of Escher’s solids. Also inside there is the Quenya word “amil” which means “mother”. Another couple of pics showing the design and two sessions:

In the same arena as the Hadouken tattoo, here’s another geeky head tattoo. I’ll be honest, I’m not familiar with Warhammer Fantasy but I know some players out there certainly are. Great White Snark, one of my favorite sources of geek tattoos, pointed out Jude here who has gone and tattooed the Imperial Eagle on his noggin. That’s true dedication kids. You can check out more photos of Jude’s head ink as well as his other Warhammer tattoos on Warhammer dedicated blog.

Simple, clean, and an equation for quite possibly the most important process on this planet: photosynthesis. Every high school kid in Biology class would probably want Marianne sitting in front of them.
