I Have the Power!

Power symbol tattoos are relatively common amongst geeks. But r3v is not only l33t enough to get a full on power button, he also got it integrated into his skin rather than the typical blackwork power logo. His three character domain (r3v.com) and WoW level 70 warlock also contribute greatly to previously mentioned l33tness.

This awesome piece was inked by super-talented Tim Kern (his MySpace page) while at the Last Rites tattoo shop.

And finally, an interesting fact, the circle broken by a line logo originally indicated “Standby mode” not “Power on/off”. But a proposal (IEEE 1621) was put forth in 2005 to change the meaning of this standard symbol. There, who says we aren’t educational?

Reason For a Tattoo

No really, this is a Reason tattoo. Josh Mobley is a composer for tv and films, and apparently has a fondness for Propellorhead’s software Reason. I’m sure this logo is quite meaningful to Josh given his line of work, but you can’t deny that it’s just an awesome logo period. I love the clean lines and the contrast of black and orange.

Reader Ink Round-Up #1

Here’s a batch of reader submitted ink. If you’ve got a geeky tattoo, send it in with your story! Email to admin@geekytattoos.com

Adele sends in ger geeky tattoo, a Library of Congress call number for The Day the Universe Changed, a book by James Burke about science, history, philosophy, and technology.

Derek Jensen also sent in his two geek tattoos. The first is the Apple logo mixed with aperture blades from a camera lens. He’s a longtime Mac user and photographer and got the tattoo down when he started his own photography business. The other ink is the Jedi symbol, in honor of George Lucas and Derek’s love of Star Wars. Both tattoos are by Tim Palmer at Palmer’s Tattoo in Marshall, MN.

Matrix Sentinel Tattoo

We’ve posted work from Brian Krabach before and here’s another one for you. A nicely done sleeve of a sentinel from The Matrix cutting into the owner’s skin to expose the binary code that runs us all, right?

It’s too bad she won’t live! But then again, who does?

Subspace has a beautiful tattoo of an origami that any geek should instantly recognize from Bladerunner. (No, seriously if you don’t know what this is from, you have some movie watching to do.) When I asked her what her motivation for choosing the unicorn was, she replied, “I love Blade Runner, what can I say” She also wondered why I was asking her about a tortoise.

This well-done unicorn tattoo was inked by Bryan Childs at Spidermonkey Tattoo of Olympia, Washington.

Laser Etching a Geeky “Tattoo”

Sometimes you need to make the mark of the geek on your body and you just don’t want to make the trip down to the tattoo parlor. You look over and notice the laser engraver sitting in the corner (c’mon guys, we’ve all got one, am I right?) and the gears in your head start turning. Next thing you know your arm is in the chamber of the laser engraver and you’re gritting your teeth in anticipation as your finger hovers over the “Start” button. You take a deep breath and push the button. As the nerves scream and the smell of burning flesh drift out of the box you wonder if the Bene Gesserit are testing you. I can only imagine what else was going through Instructables user Tetranitrate’s head as he sat for this process a couple times.

When it was all said and done, he had a Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Instructables logo marked on his skin, not to mention a handful of Wingdings tattoos on his fingers.

Hey, wait a minute, aren’t lasers for removing tattoos?!

Sometimes It’s Just Simple

It doesn’t get much more straightforward than this one. “Gee, I want to get a geek tattoo, but I’m not sure what to get.” “I can just ink ‘Geek’ on your forearm with a cool background.” “Let’s do it!”

We found this one on fiatlux’s Flickr stream. She says she took it at a WordPress meetup during the 2007 BlogWorld Expo in Vegas. Unfortunately she didn’t get his name, so this man and his “Geek” stamp are anonymous for now. If you know who this is, let us know!

UPDATE: Mystery solved! The owner of this tattoo is John Hawkins. He’s got another shot of the tattoo on his Flickr stream along with several other nice pieces of ink.

Drew’s Dedication

Drew Olanoff is the community manager / evangelist for Strands, a company with the goal of helping you find things you didn’t know you liked. We’re going to say he’s more “evangelist” than “manager” since he has the company’s logo tattooed on his forearm. That’s true dedication, someone give this man a raise.

In addition to his Strands logo he also has an RSS logo on his wrist (with headphones to denote podcasting audio), a large microphone spanning his inner forearm, and a Kid Robot tattoo gracing his back. The RSS and microphone tattoos were done at Painted Flesh in Brookhaven, PA, and the other two by Ricket at Cold Steel America in San Francisco, CA.

Love and Lies Portal Tattoo

wcctat.jpg

I loved playing Portal, it was quite possibly one of the best games to come around in recent times. It was a simple premise, but it generated quite a bit of following, as well as memes that continue to this day. I sit here writing this in my “The cake is a liar” shirt, and marvel at the extra step this unknown person has taken. I wasn’t able to find any info on how owns these lovely pieces of ink, or where they got them done, but they had to be shared and appreciated. If anyone has any info, drop a comment.

Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense Tattoo

BPRDsymbol.jpg

Stephen Lindsay, writer/creator of the graphic novel “Jesus Hates Zombies” and the webcomic Ham and Eggs, sports a logo known to true Hellboy fans. If you aren’t familiar, it’s the logo for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, aka Hellboy’s employer. Stephen is no stranger to ink though, as he has a total of 23 tattoos, including Spider-man and Yoda.
